I had an event happen over the weekend that really opened my eyes. A reality set in that I am indeed not a child. Nor do I have to accept actions from people who treat me as one either.
I believe, much like other people, that in order to respect you must be respected. How else are we going to learn respect if no one has ever shown us respect.
We would never truly learn what it means, we would only know control.
This also means respecting your children. Even the youngest of ones. Respect their bodies, minds, independence and everything in between.
One day they will look back and re-evaluate their childhood.
You will then have to be the one hoping they still want you in your lives.
Respect can make all the difference in the world.
Trust me.
One of my favorite line from John Mayer's song Daughters-
Fathers, be good to your daughters
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
So mothers, be good to your daughters too
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
So mothers, be good to your daughters too
This goes for our sons and our daughters.
Love them.
Respect them.
Laugh with them.
Cry with them.
Be human with them.
Think about it.

preston and i were talking about this just last night on our drive home. i think so many people either 1) forget and 2)didn't think to respect their child in the first place.
